Review: The Rabbit and the Rose, Sweet Grassmarket (Venue 18)

A NAMELESS rabbit and a posh schoolboy with an improbable love of railroad blues journey in search of a fabled black rose and it all ends – and starts, and continues – messily.

Star rating: *

Flyaway Theatre’s fussy fairytale goes to town with the theatrical devices – puppetry, live music, homemade props, meta narrative, surrealism and jokey asides for the parents – but the show is hamstrung by halting acting, poorly executed sound and lighting effects and fundamentally bad storytelling.

It does, however, win the award for most performers shoehorned into a tiny space.

Until 19 August. Today 3:55pm.
