Review: Beatle Mal’s Legendary Band, Paradise in the Vault (Venue 29)

“All my life I’ve wanted to be an entertainer,” says actor Nik Wood-Jones in character as the Beatles’ long-serving roadie and fixer Mal Evans.**

Be that as it may, why did he have to inflict on us his/Mal’s tortuous ditties about how great it was hanging out with John, Paul and the rest?

The infrequent musical elements of this in-character one-man show are the most unsuccessful part of what’s otherwise a pleasant enough retelling of Evans’s biography.

A few choice Beatles anecdotes are recounted, and Wood-Jones’s laconic scouse impersonations are convincing.

Until 27 August. Today 10:15pm.
