Becki Cooper of the Flodden 1513 ecomuseum, which commissioned the tartan, is part of a team co-ordinating events to commemorate the anniversary of the battle between Scottish and English troops on 9 September 9, 1513. James IV was killed in the battle along with more than 14,000 men. He was the last monarch in the British Isles to suffer such a death.

Designed by Gordon Nicolson of Nicolson Kiltmakers in Edinburgh, the tartan pays tribute to all those who died in the battle.

Its colours represent the colours of the battlefield, as well as the golden yellow and dark red of the Scottish army’s uniforms and the tudor green and white of those worn by England’s army.

The tartan was woven in Selkirk by A Elliott Fine Fabrics Ltd. It has been officially registered by the Scottish Register of Tartans,

Mr Nicholson said: “We wanted to commemorate this important milestone in Scottish history and we hope that those people who have already purchased their ties will wear them on 9 September. So far we have produced some waistcoats and ties, however, the tartan ideal for a kilt shawls and rugs.”

Alistair Bowden, project coordinator of the Flodden 1513 Project, said: “This is a subtle tartan bringing together the symbolism of the event and its protagonists. It is a tartan that I am sure many people will be proud to wear, or happy to use in everyday life or for a special occasion.”
