Cowan was removed from the football talk show after a fierce backlash against a newspaper column in which he mocked women’s football.

In the column, Cowan called members of the Scottish women’s football team “blokes”, and suggested that the stadium in which the national side played a recent game should be razed to the ground.

Cowan claimed that his comments were tongue-in-cheek, but was suspended for two editions of the show which he co-hosts with Stuart Cosgrove.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We’ve had several discussions with Tam following his newspaper column and he has made it clear to us that he made a serious error of judgement, for which he has apologised.

“He has also been reminded of his responsibilities as a broadcaster for BBC Scotland and on that basis, he will be back co-presenting Off the Ball this weekend.”
