T in the Park review: Maya Jane Coles, Slam Tent

THE Saturday Slam Tent delves T in the Park into nocturnal sunshine with Maya Jane Coles delivering some of the silky smooth house that has seen her glide to the centre of deep house attention.

Playing amongst a molten technicolour visual backdrop, Coles dropped a meandering set of tracks, including whispers from her solid debut, ‘Comfort’. Mixing with gentle, languid control, she delivers a set of measured beats, rolling bass filtering through the cavernous venue.

The beauty of Coles’ music lies in the subtlety of her production, and with the likes of soft guitar picks, clangs of steel drum or old school house vocals, she possesses exquisite taste for elegant touches that are clear to see in the murk of The Slam Tent.

So glossy is her set, that it’s akin to a massage of sound, the complexity of her mixing is just as alluring in the live setting. The tent itself perhaps sees the bass delivered little too heavily, which muffles some of the more subterranean layers, yet Coles’ commands the set with quiet authority.

She slowly rises the tempo, and the sea of swaying bodies responds with aplomb. Legends Laurent Garnier and Slam share the stage tonight, and they have a serious challenge in shaking T in the Park from the petite producer’s spell.
