They will all be performing at Kelvingrove Bandstand when the much-loved landmark opens to the public for the first time in 15 years this summer.

The bandstand, which dates back to 1924, in Kelvingrove Park, has undergone a £2 million revamp to ensure it can play a part in Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games.

The 2500-capacity concerts will be staged over two long weekends just after the games, when the venue will host one of four “live zones” across the city, providing free entertainment and live broadcasts of the sporting extravaganza.

Pop and rock concerts were a regular fixture at the bandstand in the 1970s and 1980s, before the venue fell out of use and was eventually condemned as a health and safety hazard.

Irish cider giants Magners are bankrolling the series of summer concerts, tickets for which are due to go on sale tomorrow. A food and drink arena will be set up next to the bandstand, with doors to the arena opening at 6pm.

Marketing director Paul Condron said: “2014 is an incredible year for Glasgow, a city that rightly enjoys a great reputation for music.

“We’re delighted to bring such a strong line-up of UK and international artists to the Kelvingrove Bandstand. It’s great to see the beautifully refurbished venue being used for such high profile events for the people of Glasgow and beyond.”

Capercaillie’s singer Karen Matheson said: “Kelvingrove is one of my favourite parks and the newly refurbished bandstand looks sensational. We cannot wait to play.”

The Magners Summer Nights are the latest in a series of major music events confirmed for Glasgow this year.

It emerged last week that One Direction, Kings of Leon, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg and Kasabian would be among the acts playing at a free Radio 1 festival.

Texas, Simple Minds, Amy Macdonald, Paloma Faith, Scottish Opera and Still Game stars Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill will be among the acts staging free shows at another of the Glasgow 2014 “live zones”, at a pop-up BBC site next to its Pacific Quay headquarters by the banks of the Clyde.

The MTV Europe Music Awards are expected to bring some of the world’s biggest pop, rock and dance music stars to the city in November, when the event is staged at the SSE Hydro.
