Six of the best Netflix releases streaming this month

Nebraska (2013)

Alexander Payne’s five time Golden Globe and Palme d’Or-nominated film Nebraska is a simple yet elegant comedy drama that astounded critics on its debut at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The movie stars Bruce Dern (who won Best Actor at Cannes in 2013 for his role as Woodrow T Grant), Will Forte, June Squibb and Bob Odenkirk. The story follows the booze-dependent Woody Grant (Dern) as he attempts to travel from Montana to Nebraska in order to collect a monetary prize. While attempting to prove to his father that the supposed prize is nothing but a scam, Woody’s youngest son David (Forte) ends up learning a great deal about Woody and his history. Beautifully shot and poignant, Nebraska is an emotional masterpiece worth watching.

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)

Written but not directed by 1980s filmmaking sensation John Hughes, Some Kind of Wonderful isn’t as well known as The Breakfast Club or St Elmo’s Fire, but it’s undoubtedly a hidden gem in Hughes’s teen movie repertoire. Tomboy Watts (played by Mary Stuart Masterson) realises her feelings for her best friend Keith (Eric Stoltz) run a little deeper when he asks out Amanda (Lea Thompson), the most popular girl at school. Cue plenty of teen angst, jealousy and betrayal, with the witty one liners and romantic ending that you’ve come to expect from every John Hughes film. Oh, and the terrible ‘80s clothes too, of course.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)

The somewhat self-indulgent sequel to Anchorman may not have made quite the impact on cinema audiences as the filmmakers might have hoped, but if you’re a fan of Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and his newsteam then it’s most certainly worth a watch. Set six years after the first film, Anchorman 2 follows Ron’s (second) descent into madness, despair and even blindness as a result of his enormous ego. If it sounds a bit depressing, don’t worry - there are more surreal and inappropriate jokes than you can shake a stick at. And, needless to say, Ron comes out on top with the help of his star-studded supporting cast, featuring Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Kirstin Wiig.

Master of None

Stand-up comedian and Parks and Recreation actor Aziz Ansari both created and stars in this brand new sitcom drawing on funny and awkward experiences from his life. Ansari plays Dev, a 30-year-old actor living in New York who hasn’t quite made up his mind about what do with his life yet. The first season will consist of 10 episodes (all available on Netflix from November 6) and the supporting cast includes H Jon Benjamin, whose voice you may recognise from animated TV shows Archer and Bob’s Burgers.

W/ Bob & David

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul actor Bob Odenkirk pops up again, this time with ‘90s TV partner in crime David Cross, otherwise known as Tobias Fünke in Arrested Development. Odenkirk and Cross starred together in surreal sketch comedy programme Mr Show between 1995 and 1998 and now they’re reviving the format with W/ Bob & David. Fans of the original HBO cult classic can look forward to seeing this double act reunited after nearly two decades.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones

An absolute must-see series for any fans of Marvel’s Daredevil, which premiered on Netflix in April this year, Jessica Jonesis a similarly dark and stylised adaptation of the original comics. Krysten Ritter stars as troubled Jessica Jones - a young woman with superpowers who has decided to open a detective agency instead of pursung the superhero lifestyle. Featuring big names Carrie-Anne Moss and David Tennant in prominent roles, this gritty, female-driven show is both a refreshing change and a promising development from Marvel.
