Scots trad stars claim glory at BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards

Scottish singers Karine Polwart and Siobhan Miller have claimed major prizes at one of Britain's biggest music industry events.

Five Scottish acts won major prizes at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in Belfast.

They were among five Scottish acts to win honours at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ceremony in Belfast.

Polwart was named singer of the year at the event, while Banks of Newfoundland, from Miller's latest album Strata, won the best traditional track prize.

Concertina player Mohsen Amini was named musician of the year while one of the two bands he plays with, Imar, won the "horizon award" for the best emerging act of the year.

Fiddler Chris Stout and harp player Catriona McKay were named best duo at the event, which was presented by Hebridean singer Julie Fowlis and broadcaster Mark Radcliffe.

Lewis Carnie, head of Radio 2, said: "The awards are an annual celebration of the thriving folk music scene - supporting both established and burgeoning folk musicians - and part of our specialist music content that we are proud to broadcast across the year."
