Readers' Queries

Q Further to our query from Donna Lamb, who wanted to know if anyone knows the exact location of the lying-in hospital on the Royal Mile as her mother-in-law was brought up there and she couldn't place it.

A Imac replies: "The best known maternity hospital in the High Street was The Hospice which was founded by Elsie Inglis in 1904. It was at 219 High Street and there are two plaques commemorating her name (look above Wannaburgers). There was a fire in the upper floors in 1921, and the services were moved to Elsie's in Spring Gardens in 1925."

Q Further to our query from Jane Campbell, of Restalrig, who was looking for somewhere that sold apple jam.

A Sally W says: "I bought a jar of apple jam at the Rudolf Steiner School Christmas Fair in November – from one of the charities that had stalls there. Fetes etc may be your best bet."

Craigie Boy (ex Edinburgh) says: "They sell it to Tesco only apparently, but also try Renshaw Napier (Scott's) website."

And Mechelle says: "There is a delicatessen on Gorgie Road, on the corner with Smithfield Street, which sells 'crab apple' jam."

Q Cliff Leverette asks: "Whatever happened to the actress known as Elizabeth Millbank? I believe she attended school in Edinburgh in the mid-70s and in 1978 was in two episodes of All Creatures Great and Small as Tristan's girlfriend Alice McTavish. She appeared in other television programs until the late 80s and then is not heard of again, unless anyone know of things other than film."
