Prince Charles and the Duchess, who were greeted by staff members waving Beano-themed flags as they arrived at the publication’s Kingsway East offices, are to appear separately in strip cartoons for the Bash Street Kids and Dennis the Menace in the special comic, which goes on sale on Saturday.

During their tour of the publishing centre they were presented with framed prints of their encounters with some of the Beano’s best loved characters.

A DC Thomson spokeswoman explained: “The special edition features strips on healthy eating and literacy with His Royal Highness starring in The Bash Street Kids strip where, following a monumental school dinner food fight, His Royal Highness sets about educating the Bash Street Kids on growing and preparing their own lunch. Meanwhile, Her Royal Highness will appear in a Dennis the Menace and Gnasher strip, visiting Beanotown to open the new school library and highlighting the importance of reading.”

She added: “The Beano is renowned for drawing iconic British faces into its strips with past issues featuring The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and famous names such as Simon Cowell, Chris Evans and Olympic heptathlete Jessica Ennis.”

Mike Stirling, the Beano’s Editor-in-Chief, said: “We are thrilled to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay onto the pages of The Beano. We’ve had a blast creating their characters and storylines. It’s not every day you get to write Their Royal Highnesses into The Beano – we hope they like it.”

He added: “I think it’s vital that kids are aware of the importance of healthy eating and reading and I hope that having some Royal guidance will make kids sit up and take notice.”

The Royal Couple, who were welcomed by Dundee’s Lord Provost Bob Duncan and members of the Thomson family, formally opened a new £25 million printing facility at DC Thomson during their tour.

Andrew Thomson, the chairman of DC Thomson, said: “We are investing significant sums in publishing and we’re proud to be investing in the future of print. By investing, modernising and developing our titles using this capability, we increase efficiency, providing more for our customers. It also allows us to create new opportunities for the business and stands us in good stead for the future.”
