The singer said he has never got used to being famous and had to take a step back from the limelight.

The star, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, is set to make a comeback when his third album, Caustic Love, is released in April. He said he retreated home to Scotland after being left stressed and burnt out by constant touring and the demands of stardom. “It all got a little bit intense and heavy,” he said.

“By all rights I should have been used to it but I never got used to it. Then I took a step back and had a listen to myself and some of the things I was moaning about – certain pressures that became an issue.

“It only takes going home for a little while to put these things into perspective.”

Paolo split with girlfriend Teri Brogan, whom he had been dating for around a decade, last year. The pair’s complicated relationship inspired his first album These Streets, which sold 2.3 million copies.

Nutini has made few public appearances since touring with his second album Sunny Side Up, which was released in the summer of 2009.
