New band of the week: Discopolis

FROM Chvrches to Miaoux Miaoux, Scotland seems to be producing a fresh wave of sparkling, radio-friendly electronic pop bands. Hopefully Discopolis can capitalise on this rather then getting lost in the noise.

This young Edinburgh band had a great 2011, headlining the closing night of the T Break tent at T in the Park and going on to play the Reading and Leeds festivals, but they haven’t quite got their due yet – perhaps because a debut album is still to appear. There has, however, been a string of glorious singles, from their signature song Lofty Ambitions to the euphoric, cheekily Donnie Darko referencing Falling (Committed To Sparkle Motion), just released. They’re a familiarly old school electropop act – they’ve clearly been listening to New Order, and perhaps Hot Chip – while Fergus Cook’s yearning vocals occasionally echo A-ha and Keane (they may not thank me for that comparison, but they should). You can catch them at King Tut’s, Glasgow, on 30 July, or listen at www.thisisdiscopolis.com
