Watts, 44, who plays the princess, was in London’s Leicester Square for the event last night. She portrays the princess’s relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, played by Lost actor Naveen Andrews, and Dodi Fayed, before her death in a Paris car crash.

Diana will go on general release on 20 September.

The actress had turned down the part twice before and said: “I was afraid to play the most famous woman of our time because of all the comparisons, of people thinking, ‘Oh, well, she belongs to us’.

“How do you take possession of a character like that, and also the sensitivity of it.”

She said of Diana’s mannerisms: “She moves her face in very different ways. That look from under the fringe was such a memorable one, we had to get that right obviously.”

Also on the red carpet were Naveen, co-stars Douglas Hodge and Juliet Stevenson, and director Oliver Hirschbiegel.
