FORMER Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon fears he is losing his eyesight.

The singer best known as Johnny Rotten said a childhood bout of meningitis, contracted from drinking contaminated water, is to blame.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Lydon said: “My eyesight is going – it started from the meningitis but it’s getting worse.

“I can’t read anything. Even newspaper headlines are blurry.”

Lydon also said he wears glasses to prevent him from falling off stage.

The Public Image Ltd singer, who has been married to German publishing heriess Nora Forster since 1979, had previously spoken about how the childhood illness had crippled him.

Lydon was in a three-month coma when he was seven years old and could not remember who his parents were.

“If I lose my eyesight, I lose my life. I’d rather give up my ears than my eyes, which might sound unusual for a musician. If I couldn’t see the world around me that would be a terrific loss.

“If I lost my vision completely, that would be something I’d have to analyse in my mind.

“It’s draining out slowly and dismally. It’s gloomy but I can enjoy depression.”
