MSPs ask questions about goals for Scottish tourism

MSPs have raised concerns about the Scottish Government’s tourism targets after hearing evidence that they are no longer realistic.

In 2006, the government set out aims to increase tourism by 50 per cent.

However, a report by Holyrood’s economy, energy and tourism committee said there “appeared to be no consensus” as to whether or not this was achievable or realistic.

Giving evidence to the committee, VisitScotland chief executive Malcolm Roughead said: “It is realistic to say the 50 per cent target will not be achieved. Clearly when it was set about five years ago, conditions were different”.

The committee has called for yearly statements from VisitScotland on progress towards the target, as well as plans to address any shortfall in progress.

Convenor Murdo Fraser said: “Tourism plays a vital role in the Scottish economy. It generates approximately £4.2 billion worth of income and employs around 215,000 people.

“While the committee welcomes the ambitious 50 per cent growth target in place, we are concerned about the apparent lack of clarity in the sector around the ability to meet this target.”

Mr Fraser warned: “In order to maximise these opportunities, the Scottish Government must work with the tourism industry to provide a centralised source of information to help understand trends within the sector.”
