A hotel made famous by a 1980s film classic set in Scotland is due to shut down this summer.

The Pennan Inn was made famous in the 1983 Burt Lancaster film Local Hero, with the distinctive red phone box outside becoming a signature of the movie.

The hotel’s starring role has drawn film fans to the inn to enjoy the real life premises.

But the owner has now said he will have to close the business due to financial pressures.

Landlord Peter Simpson to the Aberdeen Evening Express that the downturn in the oil industry and changes to the drink-driving laws had led to a loss in custom.

He said his clientele was now made up of just 12 local residents.

Mr Simpson, who has run the pub for nine years, told the newspaper it was with a “heavy heart” that he was closing.

He said off-season trade meant it was no longer “financially viable” to keep the doors open any longer.

He said: “Business hasn’t been good in the past three or four years. It’s just me running things here now and I’m struggling to make a living from it.”
