A WOMAN was fighting for her life last night after a motorway car crash, police said yesterday.

The 22-year-old was in a critical condition in hospital after the accident on the M74 on Saturday.

She was a passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by another 22-year-old woman, that was heading south when the car left the road and crashed on to the embankment at the side of the motorway at about 5.15pm.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near the Bothwell services, and both women were taken to Wishaw General Hospital.

But the passenger, who suffered head injuries in the crash, was later transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

Meanwhile the driver of the car was being treated for injuries to her arm and was in a stable condition.

Strathclyde Police have appealed for any motorists who witnessed the crash to contact them.
