He will playing the father of a teenage runaway in the new independent movie Fireworks, which is due to film in and around Gullane, in East Lothian, in the spring.
Billed already as Scotland’s answer to “Little Miss Sunshine,” the story revolves around a London teenager who runs away up north to find her uncle Gillies only to discover he is actually her father - and has bipolar disorder.
Open online auditions are currently being held in a bid to find a new star for the role of 13-year-old Kat.
Fireworks will be the next project for Glasgow-based Synchronicity Films, which made the romantic comedy Not Another Happy Ending with Karen Gillan.
A spokeswoman for the company said: “The ideal candidate will be a young-looking sixteen year old with a London accent, but the team are prepared to be blown away by any fresh new star who can play a 13-14 year old London girl.”
The team assembled so far on Fireworks have worked previously on the likes of Festival, Donkeys, Red Road, You Instead and Jude.
As well as Gullane’s hugely-popular beach, the main interior filming will be done at Whatton Lodge, a miners convalescent home, which is reputedly haunted.
Casting director Simone Pereira Hind said: “We are lucky enough to have secured the hugely-talented Ewen Bremner to play Gillies.
“Now we need to find an equally-gifted youngster to play his daughter. There are not many young actresses with the sparkling talent required for the role and we aren’t expecting this to be an easy task but we are excited about the possibility of finding a newcomer to set the screen alight.”
Director Hannah Robinson added: “It’s really important to me to make this film because my dad was bipolar and when I was a kid, I didn’t understand it and nobody talked about it.
“When one in four people experience some kind of mental illness, that means everyone needs to understand it in the same way as they do regular illnesses like chickenpox or asthma. I want to make a funny and dramatic movie which doesn’t demonise the condition.”
