A statement on true-to-you.net, a fan site on which Morrissey posts official messages, confirmed that the planned show at the Harpa concert hall in Reyjavik had been cancelled ‘due to the refusal of management to sell only vegetarian food’ on the night.

Morrissey, who released an album titled Meat Is Murder with former band The Smiths, is a prominent campaigner for civil rights, and said in a statement: “I love Iceland and I have waited a long time to return, but I shall leave the Harpa concert hall to their cannibalistic flesh-eating bloodlust.”

The singer has postponed concerts in the past, most notably at the 2009 Coachella Festival in California, when he left the stage after complaining about the smell of burgers being cooked, telling the crowd: “I can smell burning flesh ... and I hope to God it’s human.”

He returned to finish his set, and told fans: “The smell of burning animals is making me sick. I just couldn’t bear it.”
