Glasgow 2014: A guide to the Games merchandise

As the countdown to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continues, organisers have begun unveiling merchanise they hope will adorn those lucky enough to have snapped up tickets for next year’s sports extravaganza.

Whether you’re looking for a stocking filler ahead of Christmas, a memento for a once-in-a-lifetime event, or just something to show your support for athletes next year, the Games’ merchandise stall has an admirable range of options, from kitsch pins and knitted scarves (it’s a summer event, but you never know...) to fashionable athletic apparel and quite a lot of things featuring Clyde, the Games’ official mascot.

CLOTHES

Classic Jacquard Logo Scarf

As sports-themed scarves go, this is pretty good: a safe, sturdy navy with the Games’ logo on either end, with some nice secondary colours. A big ‘Glasgow 2014’ emblazoned on the centre of the scarf is unambiguous, but not obnoxious. Nice effort.

Alpine Hat

The scarf we can understand - Glasgow can get pretty blustery without much notice - but the alpine hat is a bit more puzzling. Granted, the weather flip-flops quite a bit in these parts, but the sight of a crowd dressed as if they’ve just arrived from a weekend in a Norwegian fjord will likely jarr with the not-impending blizzard in July and August.

Men’s Classic Range

Far from being drab, the minimal logo and no-frills design of the Men’s Classic Rain Jacket (£45) makes this one of the Games’ more attractive garments. It won’t date as badly as some of the other items, that’s for sure. Same goes for Men’s Classic Ringer Tee (£17): it won’t bowl you over, but it’s elegant enough, and the white trim is a nice touch. We also like the Men’s Classic Striped Classic Logo Polo (£23), available in navy and white. Meanwhile, the Men’s Classic Striped Rugby shirt (£37) is perhaps the most handsomely distinctive of the lot.

Men’s XX Games Range

If you’ve been a student for any length of time in the last decade, the Games’ XX range will look very familiar. So we’re guessing the rugby tops and varsity t-shirts are aimed at younger folk - Generation XX, if you will. The range is a mixed bag. The Men’s XX Panel Rugby top (£40), with its thick yellow stripe running across the chest, looks like an invitation for a Range Rover to park on you. The Men’s XX Games Tee (£20) isn’t too bad, though. The Men’s Script Tee (£20), with its baseball-style text emblazoned on the front, has a similarly sporty feel.

Women’s XX Games Range

For a few reasons, the women’s XX range is a bit better than the men’s. The Ladies Classic Polo (£20), available in black and pink, is much less cluttered than the busy rugby tops in the men’s range. The Ladies XX Hoodie (£40) is a trendier version of the men’s equivalent, incorporating pink varsity text on a navy background.

Unisex Hoodies

These come in navy, light grey marl and a very bright pink. In the same vein as the Mono Print Tees (£12.99 for men, £12.99 for women), it bears a large Games logo on the front.

A decent, if basic range of stuff for the kids: two hoodies (one with a large Games logo on the front at £20, available in grey marl, navy and pink; the other a with Clyde taking pride of place on the chest, and available in grey marl and navy at the more expensive price of £29.99) and a Clyde t-shirt, available in white and navy (£11.99).
