The nation’s most popular visitor attraction has unveiled the line-up for its landmark year, which will also see the opening of 10 new galleries showcasing more than 3,000 science, technology, decorative art, fashion and design exhibits.

More than 50 new taxidermy specimens are being created at the Edinburgh attraction for its primates exhibition, which will also feature displays of skeletons, film footage, models and photography.

Skyscanner stays ahead of technology curve

Scotland has a rich history when it comes to its contribution to invention – from the steam engine to the telephone and television – and the culture has always been one of game-changing innovation that can be exported globally.

Edinburgh-based travel search engine Skyscanner has continued to fly the flag for that tradition. It has recently been recognised for its pioneering approach to product innovation, picking up awards for overall Scottish Business of the Year, the International Technology Star award at the ScotlandIS Digital Technology Awards, as well as the PwC UK Tech Award for best tech company in the digital economy.

Past Scottish winners of Sport Personality of the Year

LIZ McCOLGAN (1991)

The long distance runner from Dundee became the first Scot to lift the silver camera trophy in 18 years when she finished first in the public poll. McColgan had enjoyed a stellar 12 months, winning gold in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Tokyo as well as triumphing in the New York Marathon. Her 10,000m best of 30:57.07, set that year, made her only the third woman in history to run the distance in under 31 minutes.

Winter has arrived

Snow is forecast across southern Scotland today after up to 15cm fell further north, causing significant disruption to main roads yesterday.

A Met Office yellow “be aware” severe weather alert is in force from 7am to 2pm, following an “enhanced” risk of overnight ice.

A spokesman for the agency said: “Rain is expected to turn to wet snow with 2-5cm possible above about 150m, and some slushy accumulations possible at lower levels. 10cm may possibly occur above 300m.”
