Five Things To Do In Edinburgh: Saturday October 13

• FILM: On The Road (15). The real-life dalliances of Beat Generation standard-bearer Jack Kerouac provide the creative spark for director Walles Salles’s handsomely crafted if emotionally underpowered road movie based on the 1957 novel of the same name. Sam Riley plays writer Sal Paradise, whose humdrum life in the late 1940s is sent into a tailspin by the arrival of nomadic free spirit Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), whose home is wherever he drops his trousers. This could be the bed of his beautiful girlfriend Camille (Kirsten Dunst), tormented poet Carlo Marx (Tom Sturridge) or incandescent 16-year-old Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Sal’s odyssey of self-discovery coincides with Dean’s painful fall from grace, set against stunning American landscapes captured by cinematographer Eric Gautier. Hedlund is magnetic, capturing the smouldering sexuality of a drifter who toys with emotions, oblivious to the consequences. Riley is a passive observer to the histrionics but Stewart is solid and scantily clad in an eye-catching supporting role that is a far cry from her heroine in the Twilight saga.
