WHAT IS IT?

Directed by Frank’s Lenny Abrahamson and adapted from Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same name, Room has already won awards and attracted praise from festival audiences and critics. Donoghue’s original novel was inspired by the story of five-year-old Felix, who was fathered by Jozef Fritzl and lived his whole life in captivity.

Joy (Brie Larson) and her son Jack (Jacob Tremblay) have been held in captivity for years by a man known as Old Nick (Sean Bridgers). During her time as a hostage, Joy has gotten pregnant and given birth to Jack, who is now five-years-old. He has never seen the outside world and Joy – referred to as Ma - made the decision when Jack was born to tell him that the 11ft by 11ft shed they live in is called Room, and is the whole universe. He is unaware anything else exists outside those four walls.

Upon seeing an opportunity for Jack to escape, Ma takes it and the little boy is introduced to the outside world for the first time. The audience is with him every step of the way as he discovers trees, animals and the sky for the first time.

DOES IT LOOK ANY GOOD?

In a word, yes. The heart-wrenching trailer that shows the unique relationship between mother and son in an unimaginable situation. The glimpse of Tremblay’s performance in particular looks to be something pretty special. The spine-tingling backing track from Hayden Calnin adds to the life affirming sentiment and this one looks set to tug at the heart strings.

• Room will be out in the UK on January 15
