WHAT IS IT?

Twenty years on from the original 1996 blockbuster, Jeff Goldblum is back as a scientist on the team attempting to fend off aliens who are intent on destroying the world, again. This time, they’ll have to do it without the help of Will Smith’s Steve Hiller, who won’t be returning for the sequel.

Vivica A Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner will all reprise their roles, and Bill Pulman also returns as President Thomas J Whitmore. New cast members include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsburg and Jessie Usher, who plays Hiller’s son.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

The Earth is under attack once again, twenty years down the line from the original alien invasion. Despite having built up international defense systems using technology salvaged from the remains of alien forces, the intergalactic threat is stronger than ever.

Now referred to as The War of 1996 by a website dedicated to the film, the conflict of the first film is the backdrop for another invasion attempt.

DOES IT LOOK ANY GOOD?

It’s more or less the same film with a bigger budget, but that so many of the cast have signed up to this one does bode well. Expect scores of Star Wars-style fighter jets, swooping apocalyptic panoramic shots and impressive CGI set pieces. Independence Day: Resurgence is due for release on June 24, almost 20 years to the day after the original film was released on July 3, 1996
