Film review: Donor Unknown | Jumping the broom | Mother's day | Honey 2

DONOR UNKNOWN (15) ***

This documentary follows JoEllen Marsh, a grown-up test-tube baby who tracks down her sperm donor father and a dozen half-siblings. There's a very Californian vibe to dad, a good-natured hippie who lives in a campervan, and a grace to Jerry Rothwell's meditative film.

JUMPING THE BROOM (12A)

***

Two black American families – one posh, one working class – clash when brought together for a wedding. A comedy-drama with a broad streak of churchy soap, this is still more appealing than Something Borrowed.

MOTHER'S DAY (18)

Hide Ad

When their bank job goes awry, three robbers try to hide out in their mother's house only to find it has been sold to a young couple (Jaime King, Frank Grillo). After they are taken hostage, mum (Rebecca De Mornay) turns up and makes everything much worse. A remake of one of those dodgy Troma flicks, by Darren Lynn Bousman, one of the Saw series' favourite directors.

HONEY 2 (12A)

The world of hip-hop dancing appears a simple one where scrappy talent fights for dancefloor glory with regular pitstops for overproduced dance-crew routines. No wonder Jessica Alba had better things to do than reprise her role as a choreographer teaching underprivileged Bronx kids how to hoof, so this time it's Katerina Graham urging an undisciplined crew to shape up in time for a talent show. The dancing is dazzling, but this genre needs to bust some new moves.
