Who’s that girl? Karen Gillan hits the big time in Cannes

Scottish actress Karen Gillan made a surprise appearance at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday.

Looking ethereal in a layered white dress, the 24-year-old Doctor Who star from Inverness posed for cameras.

She announced her arrival on the Cote d’Azur through Twitter and is understoodto be in town to promote her first major film Not Another Happy Ending.

The Scottish actress will star as an eccentric author suffering from writer’s block after she finds success with a best-selling novel.

She finished filming Doctor Who last month after playing the role of Amy Pond for threem years.

The Time Lord’s companion will leave in the fifth episode of the new series to be aired later this year, along with screen husband Rory Williams, played by Arthur Darvill.

Yesterday, it emerged in Cannes that British comedian and actor Steve Coogan will return to big screen music roles after signing to star in a film abouthe Northern Soul music phenomenon.

Coogan, better known for his roles as cringeworthy radio DJ Alan Partridge and as Octavius in Night at the Museum, has put his name down for Elaine Constantine’s new offering, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Coogan joins a cast already boasting James Lance, Christian McKay and Roisin Murphy in the movie simply titled Northern Soul about the 1970s’ underground music movement that took northern England by storm.
