Trailer of the Week: Dark Shadows

THE Scotsman takes a peek at the trailer for Dark Shadows, Johnny Depp’s latest film

Hang on, wasn’t there a TV series called Dark Shadows back in the 1970s?

Indeed there was, and this is the big-screen update, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as the vampire Barnabus Collins.

So what’s the sketch?

Collins wasn’t always a vampire. Back in the 1770s he was the master of Collinwood Manor – a big, spooky house in Maine. But when he broke the heart of a jealous witch (Eva Green), she turned him into a vamp and had him buried alive.

Hell hath no fury, eh?

Quite so. Anyway, 200 years later, poor old Barnabus is inadvertantly released and returns to his stately pile to find his descendants in dire financial straits.

And I’m guessing an 18th-century vampire doesn’t exactly fit in in the 70s…

You could say that. When he asks the matriarch of the present-day Collins clan (Michelle Pfeiffer) how soon she can “make the horses ready” she informs him they don’t have horses – they have a Chevvy. He doesn’t really get TV either, asking “what sorcery is this?”

When’s it out?

11 May.

I can hardly wait.
