Actor Douglas Henshall is in contention twice in the same category for the forthcoming Royal Television Society Scotland Awards.

Documentaries about the remote island Fair Isle, the Dunblane shooting tragedy and the Scottish-built ocean liner Queen Mary have all been shortlisted.

Gok Wan and The Hairy Bikers could also claim honours at the awards ceremony, which will recognise shows which are made in Scotland for the UK-wide network, as well as Scottish production companies.

Still Game’s long-awaited return to the nation’s screens after a nine-year hiatus is up against police sitcom Scot Squad’s Christmas special and a third BBC Scotland show, Two Doors Down, which stars Elaine C Smith, Alex Norton and Jonathan Watson, in the comedy category.

Its nomination for the RTS Scotland honour has emerged just weeks after BBC Scotland confirmed an eighth series of Still Game would be filmed this summer and broadcast later this year.

The third series of Shetland, which stars Henshall as detective Jimmy Perez, is in contention for best drama against In Plain Sight, which saw the actor depict a police officer in pursuit of the serial killer Peter Manuel, played by Martin Compston.

Also in the running in the same category is the Victorian espionage thriller The Secret Agent, which was filmed extensively in Edinburgh, which stood in for London in the adaptation of the Joseph Conran novel.

Coltrane, who shot to fame in the hit crime drama Cracker, could be honoured for his Critical Evidence series, which explored the techniques used to crack real-life murder cases. The Sky Sports coverage of Hibs’ Scottish Cup victory against Rangers - which ended the Edinburgh 114-year-old hoodoo in the tournament - will be competing against the BBC series Scotland’s Game, which explored key episodes in the nation’s football history.

Lorraine Kelly is in the running for “on-screen personality of the year” for her hosting of STV’s Hogmanay show.

April Chamberlain, chair of the judges for the awards, which will be held in Glasgow next month, said: “Entries for this year’s awards were greater than ever before with a fabulous spread across all the categories.
