The party’s culture spokesman, John Nicolson, and Pete Wishart, chairman of the Scottish Affairs Committee, were accused of undermining the work of Stephen Daisley.

Mr Daisley, digital politics and comments editor, was reported to have stopped writing online articles amid pressure from the SNP. A party spokesman said: “At no point have the SNP or any of its parliamentarians asked for Mr Daisley to stop writing, and any suggestion otherwise is completely untrue. Any editorial decisions are entirely – and rightly – a matter for STV.”

A spokeswoman for STV said Mr Daisley remained a “key contributor”.
