Field of Light exhibition opens in Edinburgh

THE Field of Light exhibition in Edinburgh opened this evening, with the optical fibre based installation lighting up St Andrew’s Square on its Scottish debut.

It is the first time the exhibition has been staged in an urban environment, with the piece, comprising 9,500 lighted glass spheres on stems, the exhibition aims to create a natural and ‘otherworldly’ immersive experience, in which people are invited to view St Andrew’s Square in a new way.

Ahead of the exhibition opening in the capital, Bruce Munro said: “The Field of Light is a bit of a chameleon in that the space changes the work more than the work changes the space.

“This is an added bonus for me because each new iteration we create delivers new surprises and gives one the distinct feeling that there is life force pulsating within the installation”.

Munro, who first had the idea for the installation as far back as 1992 when travelling through Australia, is best known for his immersive large-scale mixed-media installations involving light.

Working in the medium for over 30 years, he has captured his responses to stimuli including music, literature and the world around him.
