Everything you need to know about Kirkcaldy Beach Highland Games

The event is thought to be one of only two beach-based Highland games in the world, and draws competitors and spectators from far and wide.

As ever, there will be strongman events featuring ‘the heavies’, including tossing the caber and shot putt.

But always there’s something for everyone. Athletics and events which encourage kids to participate are also a big part of the day, however this year there will even be a cycling display on the sands.

And the weather looks like it will hold up for the event, meaning spectators and competitors shouldn’t have to worry about rain.

Last year’s event was hailed as a huge success, and it is thought there were around 3000 people there to enjoy the sun-kissed event.

Organisers are keen to ensure that the games continually add more parts and grow year after year.

The Kirkcaldy event is growing in popularity and reputation with each year, attracting more competitors.

Bill Harvey, BID manager at Kirkcaldy4All, said the event has a lot to offer.

He said: “It’s very competitive, and the guys who do the professional Highland circuit love running on the sand.

“We’re really looking forward to it. It’s always a great day out.

“We’ve got a lot more athletes this year, coming from as far as Kendall in the north of England and Inverness in the north of Scotland, so it’s really growing in popularity.

“We have everything crossed that the weather holds, the forecast is looking reasonable.”

Bill said that the aim is to grow the event a little evey year.

“It’s a gradual process, but we try to add something each year. We’ve added cycling this year, and have a demonstration.

“Traditionally it’s just been the heavies, the athletics, and Highland dancers, so we’re looking to add to it more and more, maybe try and get some of the local heavyweights to come in and compete.”

While the promenade area is often thought of as being under-used, Bill said that the Highland Games help to make the most of the waterfront.

“We have about 18 stalls on the day, with different types of things on offer.

“We’ve got a fantastic location in the waterfront, and we really need to start utilising it for more and more events, but it’s got a great viewing platform if you’s at the sea wall looking down, there’s easy access to the town centre, so you can always pop up for a spot of lunch, so it’s a great event for the area.”

Bill’s message to the public is to pop along and make the most of the event: “Just come and enjoy yourself, watch the events, visit the stalls, and hopefully bring the sunshine with you.”

Programmes for the games will be available on lamposts in the area.
