However, the 27-year-old songstress has now told of her heartbreak for the first time and revealed that the marriage only lasted 12 months.

She told how she thought she had made a mistake by marrying during a hectic period in her life which saw her rocket to fame after the release of her debut album Our Version Of Events and her performances at the London Olympics.

She said: “We were mates, but maybe we shouldn’t have been married.

“We were married in the madness, the whirlwind.

“It was literally: Olympics, wedding - fly to Montenegro, get married, fly back - and we had maybe a week’s honeymoon together.

“He was the person that had been there from the very beginning.

“And maybe I was just looking for ‘OK, this is my guy. Whatever happens, no matter how crazy this gets, I’ve got someone,’ but our lives were so separate.

“I was on tour all the time and I think it was quite unfair of me to want his world to fit into my life so much.

“He’d come on tour then he’d go away for three months on a marine biology expedition somewhere.

“When we caught up it was great and we could tell each other stories but it was almost like we were living our lives away from each other and growing into different people.”

Emeli said the split left her devastated and on the verge of a breakdown. She hopes to remain friends with her former hubby and is keeping a tattoo she has above her left breast which reads ‘I love you Adam’ in Serbian.

She is now single for the first time in 10 years as she prepares to record her much anticipated second album.

She said: “He was my first ever boyfriend. That’s the only person I’ve been with for the past 10 years.

“So losing our relationship more than the marriage was the big part for me to deal with.

“Losing that support and structure in my life was the biggest thing.

“We really did grow up together.”

She added: “It’s the first time I’ve been single since I was 17.

“My sister, who’s always had fun in life and always just gone with the wind, she was like ‘It’s tough out there, it’s wild out there’.

“So I’m learning all about men and about people.”

Our Version Of Events was the biggest selling album in the UK in 2012 and has beaten The Beatles’ record for most weeks in the charts.

Emeli’s profile was also boosted when she performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympic Games.

She studied medicine at the University of Glasgow but gave it up in her fourth year to concentrate on music.

In addition to performing, she has written songs for the likes of Cher Lloyd, Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis, Tinie Tempah and Cheryl Cole.
