Dundee University to honour author Val McDermid

LEADING Scottish crime writer Val McDermid is one of the prominent figures from literature, design, and medicine who are to be honoured by Dundee University at its summer graduations later this month.

The university today announced that it will also be awarding honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws to Mary Schwartz, director of the skin disease charity and patient support organisation the PC Project, and Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum in London.

Professor Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the university, said: “In choosing our honorary graduates we are looking for the best possible role models for our students and staff, and we are mindful of excellence, inspirational quality and integrity.

“These are all qualities displayed in abundance by our distinguished guests.”

The graduation ceremonies take place from 19 to 21 June in the Caird Hall in Dundee.

Ms McDermid, who has now written over 30 best selling books, has worked closely with leading forensic scientist Professor Sue Black at the university and helped instigate the “Million For A Morgue” campaign to build a state-of-the-art mortuary facility at Dundee.
