Daughter of Proclaimers star wins prestigious songwriting award

The daughter of Proclaimers star Craig Reid has won a global songwriting honour - just months before she releases her debut album.

Leith-born Roseanne Reid is celebrating after winning the “Lyrics Only” category in the Nashville-based International Songwriting Competition for her song Amy.

It was among 344 songs shortlisted from more than 160,000 entries from 130 different countries for the awards, which are open to all professional and amateur songwriters.

The 25-year-old, who started singing after seeing Martha Wainwright in concert when she was only 12, and performed in public for the first time when she was 17.

She said: “I wrote this song about six years ago at home in Edinburgh. I wasn’t in a great place, and this song was undoubtedly the best thing that came out of it. It’s been good to me ever since.

“I’ve never won anything like this before - it’s the most prestigious songwriting competition there is, and I’m humbled to be up there.”

She has been making a name for herself in Scotland’s folk and roots music scene in recent years after winning the backing of country-rock legend Steve Earle after attending one of his songwriting camps and has recorded a duet with him for her debut album. Due for release later this year, it has been produced by the English folk and rock musician Teddy Thompson.

Reid, who is now based in Dundee, has previously supported the likes of Blue Rose Code, Luka Bloom, Dick Gaughan, Tommy Reilly, The Wynntown Marshals and Lucy Spraggan.
