Daniel Day-Lewis to consider Celtic film role

DANIEL Day-Lewis is considering a major role in a film about Celtic, it has been reported.

• Club confirms discussions with film-makers, including director Peter Mullan

The Oscar-winning actor is said to have “expressed an interest” in the role of Celtic founder Brother Walfrid.

Director Peter Mullan reportedly approached Day-Lewis, 55, about the part of the “pivotal” and “charismatic” priest as insiders expressed delight at the potential move.

One source told The Sun: “We’re thrilled he has expressed an interest.

Brother Walfrid was a pivotal and charismatic figure in the history of Celtic and the Irish community in Scotland. Daniel Day-Lewis would be everyone’s ideal choice to portray him.”

Brother Walfrid founded Celtic in November 6, 1887 at St Mary’s Church in Calton, Glasgow, establishing the club with the aim of tackling poverty in the city’s east end.

The team’s first game the next year was against arch rivals Rangers - which they won 5-2.

It is believed that Mullen will work on the film with Peter Broughan, who helms Rob Roy Films, the company behind Rob Roy and The Flying Scotsman.

A Celtic spokesman confirmed the existence of the project, saying they were involved in discussions.

“We are aware of the project and are right behind it. It’s a huge project and we are involved in discussions,” said the spokesman.

Daniel-Day Lewis became the only man to have won three Best Actor Oscars after picking up an Academy Award for his portrayal of US president Abraham Lincoln. He has also won Best Actor Oscars for playing Irish painter and writer Christy Brown in 1990 film My Left Foot and oil baron Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood.
