Making a plea to fund a cure for future generations, he said: “Let there be no mistake; MND is a death sentence. It affects how I eat, how I breathe and it is the reason why I am in this wheelchair at just 30 years old.

“Soon it will kill me. It’s too late for me, but with your help there can be hope to find a cure for the next generation.”

Mr Aikman was diagnosed with MND at the age of 29 and, since his diagnosis, has raised over £300,000 for research into a cure for the disease.

Mr MacAulay said: “I’ve met Gordon a few times now and his selfless effort to help find a cure for MND for future generations is inspirational.”
