Chvrches, Django Django to play Edinburgh Hogmanay

TWO of Scotland’s hottest new bands have been booked to headline Edinburgh’s Hogmanay street party.

Mercury Music Prize nominees Django Django and BBC Sound of 2013 contenders Chvrches will go head-to-head at the flagship Waverley Stage.

The two electro-pop acts - Django Django from Edinburgh and Chvrches from Glasgow - will be joined by the evergreen punk rockers The Rezillos, who were formed in the capital in 1976.

Organisers said a “uniquely Scottish” line-up for the street party had been booked for the main stages at the street party to celebrate the 21st birthday of the event, now worth more than £30 million for the city’s economy.

Fence Collective founder King Creosote will appear with his band on the event’s Scottish stage, on Frederick Street, along with Shetland outfit Fiddlers’ Bid and Glasgow-based Celtic supergroup Treacherous Orchestra.

Ticket prices for the 80,000-capacity street party - which will have five stages - were raised to £20 for the first time this year, although people with an Edinburgh postcode can snap them up for £16 - £1 more than last year - until the end of this month. The event has been all-ticket since 1997-8.

Eighties pop icons the Pet Shop Boys have already been confirmed as the headliners for the flagship concert in the gardens at the Ross Bandstand.

Other acts have still to be confirmed for a stage at the top of The Mound, while the precinct next to the Scottish National Gallery will again host an open-air ceilidh dance.

Pete Irvine, artistic director of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, said “Scotland’s big year starts here and what better way to launch ourselves into the new year than with a showcase of Scotland’s musical talent in the home of Hogmanay. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay will once again be the best new year party on the planet.”

The full line-up for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival, which runs from 30 December - 1 January, will be unveiled in mid-November.

Meanwhile celebrated Scottish band, Deacon Blue, have been confirmed to headline Stirling’s Hogmanay celebrations, topping the bill at its traditional castle concert.
