Chickens given high-viz vests to protect them from traffic

A Bed and Breakfast in Perthshire has come up with a novel way of protecting their chickens - by giving them high-visibility vests.

The owners of Glenshieling House, which is in Blairgowrie, came up with the idea after noticing that their free-range chickens often wandered onto the road from the garden.

The B and B’s popular Facebook page charts the adventures of the chickens, which are referred to as the ‘Glenshieling Girls’.

There are 14 hens at Glenshieling House, which are used to make sure the eggs for breakfast are as fresh as they can be.

Videos on the Facebook page today showed the high-visibility hens going about their business on the roads.

One user wrote: “Has to be seen to be believed - lol. Hope that does the trick and keeps the adventurous Nicola and her sidekick safe when they are out on the randan - wee rebels”

Owner Louise Lennox told STV: “They normally stay in the garden but a couple of them like to go for a wee wander down the path and sometimes across the road.

“I just thought it would be a little bit of fun and would also keep the hens safe, so I put some vests on the wanderers.”
