Cameo cinema banned from Edinburgh Film Festival

The Cameo uses a specially designed screen for showing 3D films in its largest auditorium. EIFF believes the screen effects the quality of non 3D showings. Because of the adverse effect on screenings Scotland’s oldest cinema has been dropped from the festival.

A spokeswoman for the EIFF said: “EIFF is committed to presenting films to the highest possible standard.

“The screening of 2D films on silver screens is not compliant with the standards set down by standards bodies, DCI and SMPTE. EIFF has a very long history of working with the Cameo.

“Unfortunately, the Cameo is currently using a silver screen, which sadly means we are unable to use that venue for the 2013 EIFF.

“We hope to be working with the Cameo again in the future. EIFF is very pleased to be working again with Cineworld Edinburgh in 2013 who at this time use matt white screens.”

The Cameo started screening festival films in 1949, and is famous for being Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino’s favourite cinema.

It was announced last week that romantic comedy, Not Another Happy Ending, starring former Doctor Who side-kick Karen Gillan will close this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Gillan, making her feature film debut, stars as Jane Lockhart who has secretly fallen in love with her Glasgow-based publisher, Thomas Duval, played by French actor Stanley Weber.

At last year’s festival the European premier of Disney Pixar’s Brave was shown, which was attended by Scottish stars Robbie Coltrane and Kelly MacDonald.
