Souter Investments bought into the firm – which publishes books for primary and secondary school children – alongside Lonsdale Capital Partners.

Andy Macfie, director of Souter Investments, said: “We have invested with Lonsdale in Avalon Funeral Plans and claims management company EMCAS so we are pleased to continue our association with Lonsdale.

“We are enthusiastic about the potential of CJ Fallon and its management team, and look forward to seeing the company develop in the coming years.”

News of the deal comes after Souter pocketed more than £100 million from selling a string of his investments.

Last month Motherwell-based Argent Energy – which turns chip fat into bio-diesel for buses – was sold to John Swire & Sons, a London-based conglomerate that owns the Cathay Pacific airline, for £80m. Souter had stumped up the cash for a management buyout in 2009.

Souter sold his stakes in insurer Esure during its flotation in March and Dorset-based yacht-maker Sunseeker, which was bought by Beijing-based Dalian Wanda Group in June.
