'Birdman' at old Hearts matches

"IN the 1940s, my father used to take me to Hearts matches at Tynecastle," writes Ian McLaren from Comiston. "At every match there was a supporter with a large box at his feet. Every time Hearts scored he'd open the box and take out a racing pigeon! The bird would circle the pitch a couple of times then fly home, I presume, to let someone know Hearts had scored. Does anyone remember this or know who the "Birdman" was?"
