Bionic hand for brave Cameron would be perfect Xmas gift

A brave boy has launched an online appeal in the hope he can achieve his one Christmas wish '“ to be able to use both his hands.

Music loving ten-year-old Cameron Millar was born without a right hand and years of issues caused by his missing limb mean he’s missed out on his dream of playing the guitar and drums.

But the schoolboy, who is a huge Star Wars fan, is determined to overcome the challenge, with the help of a high-tech bionic limb.

The pupil, who said he is “really hoping for a hand from Santa”, needs to raise £10,000 before Christmas to buy the innovative limb – inspired by the Star Wars lightsaber hand.

A range of robotic hands developed by Open Biotics for youngsters have been inspired by hit films including Iron Man and Frozen. The UK-based firm says it aims to “push the boundaries of robotic medical technology whilst being cost-considerate” and has won multiple awards for engineering and innovation.

Cameron’s life-changing limb would feature an illustration of his role model Luke Skywalker. And the youngster also revealed one of the first things he plans to do is to learn a musical instrument once he receives the special hand.

Cameron’s mum, Margaret Millar, said: “The support we have received already is so overwhelming, this means the world to Cameron and not being able to provide your child with their biggest wish is really difficult.

“How can you say no when your child asks you for a hand?

“We really appreciate every single donation big or small.” 

The family has launched an appeal with Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids in Edinburgh,, with donations already rolling in and the fund for his innovative treatment is already at £6,000.

Emma Kemp, charity manager at Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids, said: “We were really touched by Cameron’s story.

“Despite facing so many challenges, he is determined to reach his goal and always has a smile on his face.

“Our charity is here to help young people in need in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife, and we’re proud to do our bit to help Cameron.

“We’re on course for a record-breaking year of donations, so I know that people in our region are incredibly generous.”
