The Arches closure threat after night of chaos

A CLUBBER who was found unconscious outside The Arches and a string of drink and drug offences recorded at the premises in a single night has prompted the police to push for permanent closure of the Glasgow city centre venue.

The venue was forced to shut more than an hour earlier than planned after 26 people were reported for drugs and drink-related offences on Sunday night.

A young woman was also found unconscious in the early hours of the morning outside the club, after which she was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where she was later discharged.

The event, run by DJ George Bowie, was due to run until 4am and was being broadcast live on Radio Clyde – but the plug was pulled after the club’s early closure.

Fifteen people attending the venue were reported for drug offences, and another 11 people were cited for offences related to alcohol abuse.

Another man was also reported over alleged licensing offences.

Police are now lobbying for the club to be closed for good, Glasgow City Council have said. A licensing review is expected to be held tomorrow.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “In relation to events at the Arches nightclub on Sunday, 15 people have been reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged drug-related offences.

“A further 11 people were reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged alcohol-related offences.

“Police Scotland can confirm it has submitted a report to Glasgow Licensing Board for review.”

The Arches narrowly escaped closure last year after a teenage clubber, Regane Maccoll, died on February 2 during a night out at the venue after she was believed to have taken a Mortal Kombat-branded ecstasy pill.
