The College of Piping, which has been the centre for bagpipe tuition in Scotland for more than 60 years, has launched a special competition for bagpipers to compose a tune to mark Murray’s remarkable win at SW19 on Sunday.

The competition has been launched on the Glasgow-based college’s Facebook page by Yvonne Wallace, the wife of Robert Wallace, the college’s principal.

Composers and pipers have been set a deadline of 31 August to submit their entries.

The tune which gets the most votes on Facebook will be featured in the college’ magazine, the Piping Times, and will receive a “substantial prize” from the College of Piping shop.

Mrs Wallace states: “Tunes should be of any genre except slow air. Lets have a great tune for Andy.”

Mr and Mrs Wallace were travelling to America today and unavailable for comment about the contest.

Stuart McMillan, the SNP MSP for the West of Scotland and a keen piper, welcomed the competition.

He said: “A pipe tune for Andy Murray is a fantastic idea by the College of Piping, and they are to be congratulated for such a creative initiative. I am sure it will capture the public’s imagination - and it’s bound to be a smash.

“Andy Murray has made history with his outstanding Wimbledon victory, his second Grand Slam, and his Olympic Gold. I have no doubt that the calibre of tunes that will be composed will be befitting of Andy’s phenomenal achievements.”
