Up and coming: Astral Planes

ASTRAL PLANES

Who are Astral Planes?

Until they realised that there were several other bands with the same name, they were called Paper Planes. So the band formerly known as Paper Planes are three blokes from Glasgow and strutting New Jersey-bred frontwoman Jennifer Paley.

New name suggestions which didn't make the cut include Meat Exhaustion, Richard Hammond's Organs, Jen Paley and the Tampettes and the name they should have chosen, Aristotle's Cough Bottle. But that's fine – it just means that one's still up for grabs.

So are they as trippy as their new name?

Psychedelia is not so much their bag. Instead, their debut mini-album Sit Still Child, which includes their two singles to date, Doris Day and Disconnected I Know, is a pithy cocktail of classic, chiming Scottish pop in the Orange Juice/Altered Images/Shop Assistants vein, Phil Spector Wall of Sound drumming and rockabilly twang, topped off with a striking vocal turn which is the perfect amalgam of Connie Francis and Patti Smith.

What are other folks saying?

"The best debut single from a Scottish band in living memory" – The Herald (on Doris Day)

"It's gonna take more than an ash cloud to stop these Planes" – Artrocker
