Almost 1.2 million passengers used Edinburgh Airport in June

EDINBURGH Airport experienced the busiest June on record out of any Scottish airport after welcoming nearly 1.2 million passengers.

The airport had 1,173,953 passengers in June, a rise of 6.8 per cent year-on-year, according to official figures.

A 15.1 per cent jump in international travellers drove the overall increase, with 715,639 people heading overseas last month compared to 621,814 in June 2015.

Domestic passengers were down 3.9 per cent year-on-year to 458,314.

The increase in passengers is believed to have stemmed from the introduction of several new routes from Edinburgh over the past year, including flights to Stuttgart, Vienna and Abu Dhabi.

Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport’s chief executive, said: “June’s record breaking passenger numbers make this another great month at Edinburgh Airport.

“Our continual growth underlines the need for Edinburgh Airport to adapt so we can accommodate the ever increasing number of people wanting to fly in and out of Scotland’s capital city.

More than a million passengers passed through the airport’s terminal between May and October last year, with this trend continuing in April, May and June this year.

The airport is currently running a public consultation about potential changes to its flight paths above the capital.

Last October, a trial of a new flight path over West Lothian ended early after noise complaints from residents in communities including Uphall and Dechmont.

Mr Dewar added: “We are engaged in the initial consultation stage of an Airspace Change Programme and I would encourage everyone to log on to www.letsgofurther.com and have their say to help the design of future flight path changes.”
