Comedy: The Alternative Comedy Experience

Josie Long, Robin Ince and Simon Munnery are among the performers at Edinburgh’s The Stand this week to record live shows for The Alternative Comedy Experience, the Comedy Central television show curated by Stewart Lee. The shows run from tomorrow until Friday.

Some theatres choose to celebrate summer with a pantomime, some simply close for a month or two. At the Tron, though, they like to let their hair down with a touch of fantastical comedy; and this year it’s an off-the-wall musical science ﬁction adventure penned by Belle and Sebastian star Mick Cooke, playwright Alan Wilkinson, and musician Gordon Davidson.

T in the Park requires little introduction, but one thing worth noting is that tickets are still available at this late stage for Scotland’s premier music festival. The Balado bash marks its 20th year with performances from headliners Mumford & Sons, Rihanna and The Killers, alongside the likes of Kraftwerk, Foals and Frank Ocean.

Any Glaswegians looking for an alternative to T this weekend could do worse than checking out uber-sleek synth act Com Truise. Thankfully the references to the Scientology-spouting Hollywood star stop with the spoonerised stage name; instead it’s all about American musician Seth Haley‘s formula of bleeps and beats, which have found a receptive audience following his 2011 album Galactic Melt.
