The world has known for more than 20 years what kind of man Mugabe is, but still he calls the shots, says WILLIAM SPRING
IN JANUARY 1981, my wife and I went to Zimbabwe to live. We stayed with the late Joe Culverwell, then leader of the Zimbabwe senate. It was then I experienced something of Robert Mugabe's personal charm.

Joe Culverwell told me he "felt tall next ...

"We in the West are very keen to export democracy to other parts of the world.."

We have seen the kind of democracy the West wishes to export in Hiroshima &Nagasaki, Vietnam, Iraq and Afganstan.

A few facts about the West's exported "democracy" to Iraq:

DEATHS- Estimates of the number of people killed range from over 150,000 to more than one million.

HEALTH CARE- Iraq's health has deteriorated to a level not seen since the 1950s.

Malnutrition rates have risen from 19% before the US-led invasion to a national average of 28% four years later.

Some 60-70% of Iraqi children are suffering from psychological problems.

68% of Iraqis have no access to safe drinking water.

An Iraqi anti-corruption board reported that official government statistics revealed that five million (or 35%) of Iraqi children were orphans.

Most Zimbabweans are not keen for "you in the West" to export this kind of democracy to Zimbabwe thank you.

People compare the WESTERN dominated colonial era and what was achieved over 90 years versus the "psychopath" in 20 years. Facts others overlook either out of ignorance or arrogance:
EDUCATION
1979 2000 % Change
Literacy rates 62% 82% 32%
Schools 2578 6048 135%
Enrolment @ skools 68616 2974178 4235%
Teacher training clgs 4 15 275%
Universities 1 8 700%

WATER FACILITIES
Boreholes 1,226 34,538 2717%
Deep wells & H20 piped schemes
26 11,056 42423%
Dams 121 2,438 1915%

HEALTH
Constructed or upgraded 456 health centres, 612 rural hospitals, 25 district hospitals as well as one provincial hospital in each of the country's eight provinces. Over 85% of our population is now within eight kilometres of a health facility. The 25% coverage of immunisation at independence has now been boosted to 92%, while ante-natal coverage rose from 20% at independence to the present 89%.

# 3 The Peter.

You're just expressing emotion by calling me trash and not laying down any facts. That approach is not very helpful hey.

William Spring,

As author of this article you don't seem to have researched your facts. Dont forget that prior to March 29 the MDC requested for a change in the Zimbabwe Constitution so that a winner in the Presidential Vote should have 50% plus one vote. Independent Observers confirm that non of the candidates got the 50% required hence a re-run was unavoidable. On what basis therefore do you say that the will of the Zimbabwean people was expressed on March 29. Legally according to the constitution of one candidate decided to pull out then the remaining candidate should be delcared a winner.President Mugabe is therefore the ligitimate President of the republic of Zimbabwe by Law.

2 Gulliver,Harare

a few facts you missed!

over 2 million Zimbabweans fled to South Africa due to Mugabe! great achievement! even Smith couldn't manage that, and you want people to believe their health has improved? no great achievement to have a vote and starve people to death between elections because they wont vote for Mugabe!

thousands dead exact figure not known!

more African have died in the last 50 years at the hands of African leader`s than the previous 100 years under any colonial government.

After reading your glowing history of Mugabe rule
what is it 3 million percent or 4 million percent inflation? the country is bankrupt!

now you lecture on democracy? what`s your experience of it?

you said

We have seen the kind of democracy the West wishes to export in Hiroshima &Nagasaki, Vietnam, Iraq and Afganstan.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki`s destruction had nothing to do with democracy! is this what you are taught in Mugabe`s schools? did the also teach you that under the American/western democracy Japan went from being a feudal ruled country to a major economic world power?
in 30 years the same length of time Mugabe has been around!

all these countries trade in US dollars! everyone that follows the western way of trade progresses (Zimbabwe an exception of course)

in the real world high inflation! massive unemployment and a bankrupt country means political failure!

only in Africa its everyone else fault! except Africans hey?
