THOUSANDS of surviving codebreakers who cracked the German Enigma codes during the Second World War are in line to receive service medals.
The Government's secret communications centre, the GCHQ, is said to be finalising plans to formally honour up to 5,000 codebreakers and other members of staff who worked at Bletchley Park and its outlying stations around the world.

Medal designs have already been confirmed.

Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, also known as Station X, was the UK's main decryption establishment during the Second World War.

Why are we taking so long to recognise these sort of people and their contibution to the success of teh Allies during WWII? Time has already run out for most of them. We still don't have a campaign medal for Bomber Command aircrews, and they really did put their lives on the line. Most of the reticence revolves around Dresden, but that is just so much PC hot air. How about the Royal Observer Corps? Any medals for them? My mother got a medal recently, for the Land Army. Kept the nation fed when the men were away fighting. Even she acknowledges that her contribution was miniscule compared to others, but someone needs to sit down and find out who is left that has been "left off the list" so far. Before there are none of them left alive to receive the recognition they deserve.
