The Other Guys, an all-male a capella singing troupe from St Andrews, have reached number two in the Amazon download chart with Christmas Gets Worse Every Year. They were yesterday beating established chart acts, including One Direction and Robbie Williams.

The group previously gained notoriety with their 2011 Royal Romance parody about Will and Kate, which notched up nearly 800,000 views on YouTube, and also received the royal seal of approval from the couple.

The festive single was only released on Wednesday but has gained support both on campus and across the world.

The Other Guys’ musical director Matthew Pattie, 22, said they had all been astounded by the song’s success.

Mr Pattie, an English literature student, said: “It’s been an amazing, but crazy, couple of days. We can’t quite believe it.

“After the royal wedding video, we got quite a lot of exposure but to get to number two in the charts so quickly is something we never dreamed of.

“Now we are just going to keep pushing and hopefully get right to the top for Christmas.

“The support on campus has been absolutely brilliant. Everyone has been tweeting and Facebooking, and some of our lecturers have congratulated us.”

Christmas Gets Worse Every Year gained 12,000 hits on YouTube in less than a day.

“We wanted to offer up a genuine, feel-good Christmas single that gets to the top on its own merit,” Mr Pattie said.
